The first of its kind in Africa? – Femme Electronic is a movement supporting women in Uganda who are interested in learning to DJ and make electronic music. Led by DJ Rachael – the Kampala-based trailblazer DJ who is celebrating 20 years in the profession this year – the project taps into a new interest in electronic music culture in the East African region. DJ Rachael explains, “electronic music is really exploding here right now, and it’s important that women who are interested in the culture aren’t left behind due to a lack of opportunities – we’re making sure everyone gets to participate!”
Initiated by Santuri East Africa and the Goethe Zentrum Kampala, the project had received a major boost with the support of Mint Berlin (who are sending co-founder / DJ / producer Ena Lind to host workshops with the community), and Native Instruments who have offered to support the project with DJ and production equipment. DJ Rachael has been a key figure in Santuri East Africa over the past few two years, building a reputation for developing an East African sound that fuses electronic music culture with strong regional influences.
