Preview: Jubilee! With Kronos Quartet, Bassekou Kouyaté & AKMI Masters @ Royal Albert Hall (London; Wednesday 20th June 2018)

Jubilee

Let’s bring our clocks and calendar pages forward, just enough to reach the 20th of June, where, at the Royal Albert Hall, Jubilee will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Aga Khan cultural and civic commitment with an inspiring night of music.

The show, produced by Serious, together with the Ismaili Centre London and Aga Khan Music Initiative (AKMI), will be staged in two parts. Both will see as protagonists the Master Musicians of the Aga Khan Music Initiative, an eight-piece ensemble gathering together some of the finest instrumentalists coming from the Middle East, Central Asia, China, and Italy, all performing music with instruments from their countries of origin.

Their sets will be enhanced by the participation of two remarkable acts and long-time AKMI collaborators. During the first half, San Francisco-based string ensemble Kronos Quartet will surprise the audience with their experimental approach to chamber music and global sounds.

The second part will be more of a family feel, where ngoni eminence Bassekou Kouyaté will be centre-stage with his wife Amy Sacko and daughter Oumou Kouyaté to revive the Malian music tradition.

So get out your calendar, open it to the 20th of June and save the date, as there will be no better way to honour the sixth decade of Aga Khan’s Imamat and his activity, supporting artists from all over the world.

Review: AfroCubism Revisited @ Islington Assembly Hall (London, 23rd April 2017)

The concept behind the AfroCubism collaboration is to celebrate and unite some of Mali and Cuba’s hottest musicians and to explore their shared spirit of Afro-Cuban soul. In the Sixties, socialist Mali politics had close links to those of the new communist Cuban government, creating strong ties between the two…

Review: Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba @ Elektrowerks (London, 31st May 2015)

In the dark and dingy environment of Islington’s Electrowerkz Mali’s ngoni master Bassekou Kouyaté and his family band Ngoni Ba took to the stage to dazzle the audience with their dexterity and musical traditions. For the uninitiated, the Ngoni is the African precursor of the banjo and guitar dating back…
