FLAWA FESTIVAL @ VARIOUS LOCATIONS (WEDNESDAY 15/05 to SATURDAY 19/05)
There’s a new festival in town aiming to expose and support the often-grueling efforts of Latin American female artists, who despite their talent and dedication, have to face back-breaking challenges and hardly see their work acknowledged.
Flawa (Festival of Latin American Women in the Arts) is a heartfelt 5-day-long tribute to all those women (cisgender, transgender, queer and non-binary), who brought Latin American cultural and artistic expressions forward. Flawa is about music, art exhibitions, films, readings, spoken words and talks, all having “what Latin American women do” as the common denominator.
The festival’s music calendar is teeming with diverse styles and traditions, starting from Rich Mix on 15th May with Barcelona-based multicultural ensemble Karamba On the following night, at the Genesis Cinema in Bethnal Green, it will be about Venezuela, with a double bill featuring Belén, a bio-pic portraying the ‘Queen of the Quitipla’ and a live performance of Family Atlantica frontwoman Luzmira Zerpa. While on Friday 17th, La Dame Blanche and Wara will stun the Rich Mix audience with their Afro-Cuban drive, brimming with hip-hop, electro-cumbia, dancehall. The sound of the Andes will delight the audience on the 18th at Genesis Cinema, where London-based Bolivian multi-instrumentalist Phaxsi Coca will bring to life some of the purest and ancestral expressions of Latin American music. Liniker e os Caramelows have the task of bringing the festival to a close at OMEARA and there’s arguably no better and more significant grand finale than a show of the Sao Paulo band.
