The legacy of Fela Kuti aka `The Black President’ looms large over London, from Kokoroko to afrobeats – the upstart nephew of the genre gone global that Fela created.
To celebrate the late Lagosian’s birthday, his former sideman Bukky Leo will be joined by surviving members of Fela’s old band Egypt 80 to give thanks for Fela’s canon of work, live at The Jazz Café in Camden.
It’s worth remembering that Fela was a jazzer before he cooked up afrobeat with a dash of highlife and a pinch of James Brown, and that he also called London home in the early sixties whilst studying at The Trinity School of Music.
So, snap up a ticket to The Jazz Café for chattering drums, syncopated brass and a potent big band sound that’ll leave you powerless but to move your nyash.
