12 hours of enriching music, engaging dances and diverse traditions. Next Sunday, from noon to midnight, Open the Gate and Rich Mix will give life to a music marathon hosting musicians coming from Japan to Trinidad, India to Brazil and playing all sorts of styles from reggae to enka, hip-hop to rebetiko. What is more, the event is entirely free.
You shouldn’t need any further reason to head for the Shoreditch venue and enjoy a full-day’s immersion in distant cultures and art forms. You’ll take pleasure in listening to Burkina Faso multi-instrumentalist Moussa Dembelè and Koroleko Band, Japanese tradition interpreters Hibiki & Akari and Greek contemporary rebetiko quintet Plastikes Karekles. Then, you’ll surely move your feet to Caribbean upbeat tunes played by Mangoseed and lively Brazilian samba and choro rhythms of Mandioka Braba.
And it’s not over, because there’ll be world beats DJs like Portuguese DJanoramix to jazz up the set changes, surrounded by the well-known African Market, drumming workshop and food stalls. Finally, the added value and quality brand is stamped by the Open the Gate character. With them around, the party can’t go wrong.
