Groove, hypnotic energy, and activism. Femi Kuti and his fourteen-strong band The Positive Force bring their contemporary Afrobeat to London. With a mammoth sound on stage, they mix African percussion with funk, jazz, and hip-hop into sets which can last for hours.  Not just contagious dance music, the songs are driven by powerful activist messages about the current socio-political landscape in Nigeria.

Femi is the eldest of afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti’s sons and was raised in Lagos where he already started playing in his father’s band, aged just fifteen.  A talented saxophonist and singer, he has been able to distinguish himself from the strong legacy to become almost more internationally well-known. Femi is cited as not only spreading knowledge of his father’s work but also bringing afrobeat to the masses.

Islington Assembly Hall is the perfect accompanying venue for his next London gig on 30th May, due to its intimacy.  Don’t expect a break from dancing, as the band will seamlessly flow from one ten minute song to another with drum and bass speed beats against the small crowd.
