Preview: Kokoko! @ XOYO (London; Thursday 4th April 2019)

KOKOKO!XOYO2

Kokoko! are a completely thrilling band, born like a phoenix from the flames in make-shift jams and studios, playing together for the first time at a multi-arts block party in the Ngwaka neighbourhood in Kinshasa, the capital city of the DMC.

The result: a fiery fusion of electro sounds, African percussive drumming, chanting, calling and singing and literally irritable grooves.

Lo-fi production and up-cycled materials have gained Kokoko! the distinctive sound to the backdrop of busy, bustling Kinshasa. They created an imagery using tin cans and engine parts for instruments, mirroring the city’s harsh but creative subcultures.

The spirit of the arts in Kinshasa means that the Kokoko! collective reaches further than the standard musical function.

Expect movable grooves, lo-fi dancing and an undeniably funky and collaborative performance.
