Preview: Neue Grafik Ensemble @ Royal Albert Hall (London; Thursday 19th December 2019)

neue grafik RAH

Neue Grafik Ensemble is a true reflection of the connections made at East London’s now legendary Total Refreshment Centre. The urban improvised music warehouse no longer runs in the Foulden Road location, but many collaborations were dreamt up during late-night jams in the studios upstairs. This band is one such conception.

The musicians build songs on a foundation of broken beats and hip-hop grooves infused with jazz and house. Neue Grafik himself is a French producer, instrumentalist and DJ starting to make a reputation on the London scene. On this project, he teams up with a live quartet; Emma-Jean Thackray on trumpet, Vels Trio’s Dougal Taylor on drums, Matt Gedrych from MaddAddam on bass and Jordan Saintard on saxophone.

The ensemble creates compositions that tell stories of London. Their music feels like a snapshot of time that will be remembered in years to come. For any admirers of the UK jazz scene, this is a gig that will invoke instant sentimentality and bring you gratefully into the present moment.
