Been a while since last time we travelled and will be a while until the next one. So, let music help us once again to virtually escape and get far away from our home and neighbourhood, at least for a few hours.
University of Tropical Sound has rounded up the perfect line-up to let you spend an exciting Sunday afternoon and evening in front of your laptop, and we are more than thrilled to join them to present you with musicians, DJs and VJs spreading, reviving and giving new meanings to the sounds and visuals from those regions.
We start with the host, London-based DJ and producer Carthnage and his set, showcasing deep bass lines dyed in Arabic tints.
Before moving overseas, let us introduce you to another UK-based act… Arguably Edinburgh’s wildest party-starters and most revered late-night clubbing diviners, SamediaShebeen will do magic as usual thanks to their entrancing musical taste and mythical record collection stretching throughout the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region.
We move slightly East, sail across the North Sea and disembark in Copenhagen, where we meet another visionary music wizard. Right now, Nuri is one of the most interesting names when it comes to North African electronic artists and Irun, his fresh-out-of-the-oven debut album our on Shouka, is one of the most riveting releases of the year. The Tunisian musician and DJ will be one of our guests of honour and present a selection reflecting his far-reaching Afrofuturistic perspective.
Few hundred miles South-West, then to Brussels, where the Rebel Up family (DJ collective and label) spreads its love for world beats and global cultures far and wide. On Sunday, we will have the pleasure of featuring a set by the Rebel Up’s honcho Seb Cat, who will spin his way through a nifty selection fully focussed on Northern Africa.
After Brussels, Paris. There, we will join Akuphone label’s founder, DJ and broad-minded music selector Cheb Gero, who will bring us out and about the Arab music world playing records from the past, present and future.
We will eventually travel to the Southern shore of the Mediterranean to reach Tunis. Tunisia and Northern Africa are the most cherished subjects of Hazem Berrabah‘s film-making, and he can also boast a side-career as DJ with his entrancing performances blending tribal and percussive rhythms inspired by his roots.
We end up on the Eastern shore of the Mediterranean, in Tel Aviv, where DJ, selector and music producer Black Lulu has built his career and global following by digging, unearthing and sharing the beauty of Levantine music, thereby growing into one of the most sought-after Middle Eastern DJs.
However, we kindly ask you to follow this PAYPAL LINK and donate as much as you wish to support the musicians and DJs who are struggling in these mad Covid-19 days.
