It will be the Afrobeat event of the year, next to one of the most exciting music parties of the month. When the official Afrobeat ambassador comes to town, you can be pretty sure that you’re going to sweat and dance away all the working week’s toxins in an all-singing and all-dancing night.

On the 2nd of March, Electric Brixton will forget that it is in London and dress up like the Shrine in Lagos for an 8-hour non-stop gig that will see on stage, directly from the Nigerian capital, Fela Kuti’s son Seun Kuti with the Egypt 80, who will be also celebrating the release of his 4th album Black Times. To support them and keep the good vibes going from 9PM to 4AM in the morning, there will be someone who musically grew up with Seun’s father, Dele Sosimi and his Afrobeat Orchestra.

Get ready and get comfy because there’s no chance they will spare you a dance!

Event Review: We Out Here Festival (Abbots Ripton, Cambridgeshire; Thursday 15th to Sunday 18 August 2019)

An inaugural festival is always going to be packed with risk and suspense, and after the downpour that Friday night experienced, a breath was held in anticipation of Saturday’s events. However, it is with sheer delight I report that the proceedings seemingly went ahead seamlessly. Saturday I have to jump…

Event Review: Wilderness Festival 2019 @ Cornbury Park (Oxfordshire; Thursday 1st to Sunday 4th August 2019]

Situated within close proximity to some of the festival’s increasingly populated hangouts at Wilderness, such as the Atrium, if you happened to stumble upon the Level stage, you were almost guaranteed to be charmed by a constant conveyer belt of talented troubadours within the world music spectrum. There were memorable…

From sacred nipple adorning, to wild swims and tree play, the festival’s main objective is to fortify the soul, restore the senses and enliven the spirit, by allowing its…

The holy trinity of pleasure, music that serves mind, body and soul. Cubafrobeat simultaneously feeds them all. The new Lokkhi Terra and Dele Sosimi collaboration show off jazzy solos to power your intellect, but never detract from the chance to lose yourself to dance. Gallery: Walthamstow Garden Party @ Lloyd Park (London, Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th July 2018)

It was another triumphant weekend at Walthamstow Garden Party. Sunbathing in glorious weather and indulging in radiant notes played by brilliant musicians, we enjoyed every minute of it. From its debut, basking in Saturday’s early afternoon heat with London African Gospel Choir and their rendition of Paul Simon’s Graceland, until Sunday…

Event Review: Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 @ Stanley Halls (London; Monday 4th May 2018)

Walking into the small, church-like Stanley Halls, one could hear the familiar stabbing-horn sounds of afrobeat emanating from the hall. The venue almost juxtaposed the performance on stage; as one entered, a musical, colourful spectacle erupted from the stage, held together with aged wooden beams and high ceilings. The sound…

Album Review: Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 – Black Times [Strut Records; 2nd March 2018]

Black Times opens with warm congas, followed by afro-typical cyclical riffs on the guitar, layered with repetitive female chorus, the introduction of bass and full drum kit, then a short break before bursting full power back into the groove – this time with an added horn section of trumpet, tenor…
