For their yearly showcase, happening at St. Mary’s Music Hall, they will bring together an intriguing line-up, presenting sounds from China, India and the Middle East. You will indeed be treated to some of the most interesting and up-and-coming ensembles in London.
It will start with the newly formed duo Stornelli with our very own Deianira Iozzi and Henry Ashworth, who are reviving the singing tradition of Tuscany alongside Apulian music to create an eclectic mix of ballads and stories.
Second, praised talent Budhaditya Bhattacharyya will perform Indian ragas. The evening will then feature Reylon Yount, a yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer) virtuoso, who’s bringing forward his Western Chinese musical roots and blending them with Western classical music, folk-pop and experimental sounds.
Finally, award-winning ensemble Oxford Maqam will perform their take on Arab and Turkish music of the 19th and 20th centuries. Based – as their name suggests – in Oxford but coming from and inspired by the Middle East and Egypt, the sextet has always been on the line between traditional and contemporary music, helping to re-discover, and offering to a wider audience, endemic repertoires usually reserved to locals and scholars.
Come and celebrate SOAS and SOAS Radio on the 1st June throughout an evening brimming with tasteful notes, enthralling musicians and music lovers.
