Preview: Terraforma Festival @ Villa Arconati (Milan, Italy; Friday 29th June to Sunday 1st July; Milano, Italy)

About 20km outside of the hectic, fast-paced city of Milan, there is a magnificent rural palace with a historic garden and a natural labyrinth, built by a Milanese noble family in around the 18th century. A place where time is suspended, once a year Villa Arconati becomes the beating heart of one of the best young festivals in Europe, Terraforma.

With a major focus on experimental electronic music, the three-day festival has earned the praises of the international press and music communities alike thanks to its pivotal sustainable philosophy, suggestive environments made of minimalistic wooden structures, and the remarkable line-ups that it has been able to gather throughout the five years since its first edition.

In the past, the festival has welcomed artists such as Berlin-based producer Objekt, eclectic DJ Andrew Weatherall, Italian techno producer Donato Dozzy and synth pioneer Suzanne Ciani. Dozzy, a long-time aficionado of Terraforma, will join the festival again this year alongside names such as Scottish electronic artist Lanark Artefax, Iranian percussionist Mohammad Reza Mortazavi and no less than techno legend and constant innovator Jeff Mills, just to name a few.

Terraforma takes its name from ‘the theoretical process in which life on a planet becomes possible through the creation of an atmosphere’, as the first sentence of an actual manifesto of the festival’s vision states. It’s a concept of experiencing music in a broader sense; interacting and feeling at one with the space around you, where everything that is man-made is designed to be re-used, recycled, sustainable and able to blend beautifully within a precious historical location that has been brought back to life after years of abandonment.

From 29th June to 1st July, Terraforma is simply the place to be.

Going to a music festival is, in a way, a sort of pilgrimage. It is, for many, an act of love towards music and the cathartic energy of being together and sharing a place, a space, an experience. Just like a real pilgrimage, it requires a decent amount of effort…

Event Review: Club To Club Festival 2017 (Turin, Italy; 1st to 7th November 2017)

This year’s Club To Club Festival did not end at 6am on Sunday morning — when its sweaty attendees fled Lingotto under a rain so heavy it was hard to tell if the sun was rising; nor with the free street party Dance Salvario, which has acted as the closing…
