Preview: Windrush: A Celebration @ Barbican Centre (London; Saturday Saturday 17th November 2018)

There has always been a deep and intrinsic bond between jazz and the Caribbean, so much so that the EFG London Jazz Festival is ready to celebrate it by dedicating a night to some of the contemporary bearers of the islands’ tradition.

Windrush: A Celebration is indeed a tribute to those who were on board the HMT Empire Windrush in June 1948 on its journey from Kingston, Jamaica to Tilbury, UK, but it’s also a tribute to the people who followed them in the next decades; their children and everyone else who’s currently strengthening Caribbean culture in the UK and enriching their new home with it.

On the 17th of November at the Barbican Centre, poet, novelist and musician Anthony Joseph will guide the audience through a musical bash dedicated to the Windrush Generation. There will be quintessentially Caribbean music from Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada with legendary musicians like Calypso Rose, Mighty Sparrow and Brother Resistance, and there will be Caribbean music ‘from London’ with Jason Yarde, Cleveland Watkiss and GAIKA.

There’s no better way in which the EFG London Jazz Festival could go fully Caribbean and pay homage to the Caribbean culture than presenting Windrush: A Celebration. You can do the same joining Anthony Joseph, on the third Saturday of November at the Barbican.
