Koichi Sakai is a Tokyo born, London based DJ, producer, musician and promoter who is widely recognised for his highly developed, unique style which reflects the varied influences that have continuously informed his creativity and career. His musical style is Jazzy and percussive; playing a distinctive and smooth mix of Soul, Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Latin and Afrobeat.
During his musical career, Sakai has collaborated in various clubs in London with Gilles Peterson, Snowboy, Phil Asher, Patrick Forge, Nostalgia77, Quantic, Bugz In The Attic, Broadcite, Mr Bongo Soundsystem, Sofrito, to name but a few.
In 2007, Sakai went to Cuba where he met local musicians and formed the band “Los Autenticos“. They recorded an album together in Central Havana. Their first CD album “Malecon” was released in December 2009 by Ghetto Lounge Recordings.
Currently he is promoting the event “Afrobeat Vibration” with Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 keyboardist Dele Sosimi since October 2008. His Afrobeat track “Ramaja O feat Bukky Leo” was featured in CD compilation and mp3 is out now on Broadcite unplugged vol.3 Beats & Pieces.
Also Sakai has released Afrobeat/Gnawa single with London based Nigerian artist Adesose Wallace and leading Moroccan Gnawa player Simo Laganwi in September 2013. It’s available on limited 7” clear orange vinyl on bandcamp and Juno records, and mp3 from iTunes, amazon and all the online music shop worldwide.
