Following the blistering success of 'Mardi Gras Mambo' in May 2012 we serve up more tasty platters of New Orleans vibes with a huge Mardi Gras/ Notting Hill Carnival mash up party!
New Orleans is a unique melting pot of music and dance culture, from the birth of jazz to the explosion of sun-dried funk in the 60's, with brass band and African influenced Mardi Gras Indian chants along the way.
We are a movement that brings this rich New Orleans culture to London and continues with Mardi Gras Mambo. On a night not long ago, a warehouse in East London was filled to bursting point with Crescent City sounds of the highest order, where sizzling Rhythm n Blues met low-down funky grooves in a joyous marriage...
Back at our spiritual home, the New Empowering Church, we go head to head with Carnival fever for the swampiest after party this side of the Louisiana bayous, with bands fresh from Ronnie Scott's.
Headliners - Dom & The Iko's bring forth storming New Orleans R&B headed up by piano virtuoso Dom Pipkin. Conjuring up the spirit of Professor Longhair and James Booker, this band's piano-driven grooves drive deep, combining wailing saxophones and savage piano playing. This band evokes the honky-tonk bars of notorious old Bourbon Street- one of the most compelling live RnB acts around.
In support - The Coalminers! Delving deep into the pocket of funk- this band fully dedicate themselves to the New Orleans soulful sound, and have built up a reputation for delivering their very own authentic swamp thing!
Live and wild on the decks, resident Voodoo Queen DJ Lil' Koko wields her stash of New Orleans vinyl-expect obscure Rhythm n Blues, funk and swamp infested brass till the wee, wee hours.
Come hungry, leave Soulful
Jambalaya, gumbo, corn bread and sweet pralines will all be on offer to feast and fuel these late night frolics.
Shhhhh- also look out for our second line street parade of live brass on 18th August at a Hackney street near the Empowering Church. Blazing tuba and bustin' street beats!
