Bossaphonik 10th Anniversary

Headlining our occasion is the UK ambassador for the Afrobeat sound. Dele Sosimi played rhythm keyboard for 7 years in the '80s for the Afrobeat founder and political activist – the Nigerian legend, Fela Kuti. Afrobeat is a fusionary genre that takes in West African highlife with funk and jazz to produce a richly polyrhythmic music.

Now based in London and leading his own band, they will be fresh from their residency in Hackney where marathon 4 hour sets are the norm and they have also just signed to the hip WahWah45s label. Afrobeat is lovingly given virtuoso treatment and we look forward with relish to their funky rhythm guitars, fiery percussion and blazing horns.

Kickin' the night into top gear is the hot Cuba-UK soundclash of Wara – the 9 "young musical revolutionaries." Wara express the Latin American experience of living here in the UK today with a sound that takes in Cuban salsa, timba and Latin-funk with UK soul, hip hop and reggae creating pioneering grooves. Wara really have forged an exciting new sound of their own.

"Young musical revolutionaries who simply ignore convention" Lubi Jovanovic, international Latin journalist/DJ since 1982.

Opening the proceedings is the gypsy-jazz of the Dunajska Kapelye duo (The Danube Band) combing Polish virtuoso violinist Piotr Jordan and Oxford music graduate, the multi-instrumentalist Zac Gvirtzman on accordion. They take influence from the folk traditions of Romania, former Yugoslavia, deepest Russia, the Ottoman empire, the Jewish shtetl and Django Reinhardt's Belgium. They combine to produce a sound that evokes your own heart strings being played.
