Camberwell Fair 2017

Camberwell Fair is a free entry music festival and market that will take place on Camberwell Green, SE5, on 22 July 2017. It is a celebration of the diverse people, culture and community of the local area, and will feature 2 top quality music stages, 40 market stalls, food, bars and games, attracting over 3000 people to Camberwell Green on the day of the event.

Wormfood Stage (hosted by Gordon Wedderburn):

The Mouse Outfit / Afrikan Boy / Kakatsitsi, Master Drummers from Ghana / Lebeaux / Tantz / Balaphonics / Me and My Friends / Strut Records DJs

Afro/jazz/electronic pioneers Wormfood curate a diverse lineup with music from both near and far, including live hiphop favourites The Mouse Outfit, traditional Ghanaian drumming and singing from the UK’s leading African drumming troupe Kakatsitsi, sleazy new school soul from Brighton’s Lebeaux, UK klezmer from Tantz, plus a UK debut for France’s Balaphonics, fusing West African balafon with brass band tradition.

Camberwell Stage (hosted by Tash LC): Shahlaa Discovers / The Midi Music Company/ School Ground Sounds / Hammer and Tongue Waterloo / Owl Parliament / Do Dat Den / Penya / B.Y.O.B.

The Camberwell Stage will play host to a series of lovingly handpicked showcases from acclaimed broadcaster and curator Shahlaa Discovers, community music activists Midi Music, pioneering music education charity School Ground Sounds and the UK’s leading poetry organisation Hammer and Tongue, plus a special set from Camberwell’s much-loved Owl Parliament choir.

There are so many innovative and independent businesses and organisations operating in and around Camberwell, and we are excited to welcome some of these to the Fair. Designer makers, foodies, independent retailers and services, as well as workshops and education programmes from local organisations are moving from the high street to the park to join in the fun of the Fair. Camberwell Fair will provide not only a day of incredible music but also a platform for independent businesses to thrive.

Legendary London live music venue Passing Clouds will host a pop-up cocktail bar, alongside a real ale bar from local craft brewery Orbit Beers and a CBGB-inspired drinking experience from drinks specialists Three15 including prosecco on tap!

Camberwell Green is the centre of Camberwell’s community and at the centre of the green, watch out for rowdy games for both adults and children including sack race, three-legged race and a mysterious game known only as ‘Camberwelfare’…..

Local Brazilian capoeira group Abolicao will perform a capoeira demonstration (Afro-Brazilian fight/dance) with traditional singing, berimbau and percussion and a public roda (dance circle) open to all.

This is the third Camberwell Fair in modern times, with previous editions in 2015 and 2016 welcoming over 8000 people to the Fair with live sets from Dawn Penn, Dele Sosimi, The Turbans and Nubiyan Twist.

2017 will be the third Camberwell Fair in modern times, but it has ancient roots: there was a Fair on the same site from 1279 until 1855 until it was shut down by the authorities for being too disruptive to local order after petitioning from the new landowners of Camberwell. Although priding itself on the safety of all revellers and minimal disruption to local residents, Camberwell Fair maintains the populist, inclusive, spirit of its raucous ancestor.

The organisers aim to create a modern version of this long-standing annual gathering, rooted firmly in the mixed demographic of modern South East London but proudly embracing the history of both the Fair and the community as a whole.
