All the way from Cape Town, we are delighted to welcome legendary South African drummer Louis Moholo and his Six Blokes.
A one-off appearance in the original format of the Blue Notes as a sextet, the band will feature Steve Williamson and Jason Yarde, both of whom were members of Viva La Black, Louis' band which made the iconic 'Freedom Tour' of South Africa in 1993.
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1940, Louis Moholo-Moholo is one of the music greatest drummers. He was a member of the legendary Blue Notes, as well as of the Brotherhood of Breath. His work as bandleader has also included many classic formations, such as Spirits Rejoice and Viva La Black. He has appeared worldwide and on record with a virtual Who’s Who of modern creative music, including Steve Lacy, Cecil Taylor, John Tchicai, Marilyn Crispell, Irene Schweizer, Wadada Leo Smith, Keith Tippett, Kenny Wheeler, and Evan Parker.
Moholo-Moholo’s electrifying live performances still exhibit the same uncompromising ferocity and creativity which have marked him out as one of the seminal figures of the national and international scenes for half a century.
Come experience the sensation of being blown away by the waves of emotion, whether overwhelmingly ecstatic or exquisitely refined. And most of all, perhaps, listen to the Louis Moholo Moholo sextet to understand how, in this music, the individual and the collective can simultaneously attain equal importance: a most elevated state of being.
