The Lantern (Colston Hall) Big Late Night Party Vibe

It's all about Afrobeat - the 70s phenomenon where the sheer power of ancient African grooves seized upon the dance floor dynamism of US funk to become an unstoppable force that lives on over 40 years later. This great double bill is a fabulous chance to hear Dele Sosimi, one of the music's originators, as well as the latest generation of top class musicians inspired by the legacy of Fela Kuti and the magic of Afrobeat.

Was Afrobeat one of the first world musics? Nigerian saxophonist Fela Kuti first coined the phrase to describe the vibrant combination of jazz and Highlife he was playing in Ghana in the late 60s just before a residency in Los Angeles brought him under the spell of James Brown's big band funk. Back in Nigeria Fela melted down all those ingredients and forged Afrobeat, one of the most potent rhythm machines in musical history.

Dele Sosimi joined Fela's band as keyboard player in the late 70s and spent seven years playing at the legendary all-night Shrine sessions in Lagos as well as touring the world with Egypt 80. Having stepped in as musical director when Fela languished in jail Dele's strong bond with the great man's son, Femi eventually led the two to create Positive Force. This new band represented a fresh generation in the Afrobeat story taking it through to the 90s when Dele moved on to the London scene and began his own bands here, passing the rich language of African funk to a newer generation while keeping the torch as bright as ever with his own bands, including Gbedu and Dele Sosimi's Afrobeat Orchestra.

Formed by some of Bristol's top jazz musicians in 2010, the mighty 12-piece Bristol Afrobeat Project is much more than a tribute to past glories. With a repertoire of new material, self-penned and about to be released on record, the band is a living, breathing evocation of the life-force that is Afrobeat. Driving percussion and brass encrusted rhythms catch the timeless quality of that ancestral funk sound, while the soaring instrumental solos stay true to Fela Kuti's musical mission to present the hearth of jazz with the soul of Africa and keep you dancing till dawn.
