Derrick Morgan

Morgan

The undisputed king of ska and one of the few original ska artist still active on the music scene, Derrick Morgan received an Order of Distinction (OD) from the Jamaican government in 2003 for his contribution to Jamaican music. At the peak of his popularity in the 1960s was the one and only Jamaican artist to hold down the top seven slots on the national pop singles chart during the same week, generating a string of smashes including "Be Still", "In My Heart", "Don't Call Me Daddy" and "Moon Hop".A year later, in celebration of Jamaica's independence he recorded the official Jamaican independence song, "Forward March". In 1966, Morgan issued "Tougher Than Tough", widely credited as the first record in the rocksteady genre. Since then he's been touring the world relentlessly as the spiritual ambassador for both ska and rocksteady.
