On Saturday 24th March, Focus welcomes the highly talented and rhythmically audacious Zimbabwean duo Mashasha and Sam to the stylish Luxe restaurant in East London.
Mashasha and Sam first played together six years ago in Harare as part of the cutting-edge jazz trio Too Open (2003 album: Zororo). Since reuniting in the UK they have formed an African bass and drums duo, fusing their traditional roots and jazz into a sort of bass groove driven, rock-trance with funky poly-rhythmic beats that makes every crowd they perform to get up and dance.
Back in Zimbabwe Mashasha and Sam, on bass & drums respectively, were popular session musicians and collaborated with the some of the best artists across the country. They also featured alongside well known Zimbabwean artists Busi Ncube and Chiwoniso on The Collaboration project (2006 album: Life At Home).
They are a fun band to watch, open and playful on stage, with a warmth that engages audiences captively – so we urge you to get yourself down to The Luxe for an evening of delicious musical flavours and good vibrations.
Dj’s featuring on the night will be playing the best of both traditional and contemporary African music:
With his weekly show on Playvybz Radio and recent features on Choice FM, Bogossy has quickly built a name for himself on the London night scene. Mixing up a ground-breaking selection of African and urban beats, from Zouglou to Afro-tech, you won't be standing still for long when Bogossy gets on the decks.
Focus Dj Oya Bun was born and raised in the Ivory Coast and later moved to Paris. His musical taste has been heavily influenced by both African tradition and the emerging sounds of the African diaspora. His sets incorporate Soukous, Kuduro, Kwaito, with a special focus on Coupe' Decale'.
Doors open 7pm-1am, £5 entry.
