LINEUP

Emmanuel Jal - South Sudan Afrobeat Dance Music

From his start in life as a child soldier in the war-torn region of Southern Sudan in the early 1980s, Emmanuel Jal has come through huge personal struggles to become a successful and acclaimed recording artist and peace ambassador now living in Toronto, Canada.“

Juno nominated Musician, Actor, and Campaigner, Emmanuel Jal releases his 6th studio album ‘NAATH’.

NAATH is a vivacious, Afrobeat infused album, drawing strongly on the unique sounds of their native land; interweaving traditional folklore and love songs - alongside infectious dance tunes. NAATH is the ancient word for the land and language surrounding the glorious Kingdom of Kush. Carefully choosing this theme the music is often at odds with the image of war and poverty that has blighted South Sudan. Instead, the album chooses to reflect upon the resilience and rich culture of Emmanuel’s identity through vibrant tones and messaging.

"South Sudan is still suffering from years of war and oppression, we feel it is our cultural responsibility to bring out the music and voices from our country. As siblings we were forced apart in our childhood through extreme circumstances, so we are excited to be united on this project to bring the sounds of our village to the mainstream."

Bamako Overground - Mali Pop Folk Blues

Born in the inspired mind of London’s own Malian rhythm buff Hans Sutton, Bamako Overground have been busy forging a new sound. The trio are irresistibly seduced by the music of West Africa, blending its influences overtly and covertly with their own carefully-selected flavours to settle into mystical dance grooves and desert blues.

Hans plays his distinctive hybrid drum kit which has previously brought Mandé styles to artists such as Nick Mulvey and Cocos Lovers, while at his flanks are the sparkling guitar of Yaaba Funk co-founder Tobias Sturmer and the hypnotic, heavy bass of folk maestro and Woodburner impresario Theo Bard.

Deep and soulful rhythms meet soaring melodies, while smooth three-part vocal harmonies spin allegories in Bamanakan and English to complete a brew that’s compelling and utterly unique.

AAA Badboy

Kaptin Barrett is a DJ, radio presenter and also head of music for Boomtown Fair, the UK's fastest growing and most ground breaking festival. His latest alias (pron. Triple A Badboy) is a nod to his long term involvement with festivals, dating back to the days of manning the Glastonbury gates as a 5 year old (with his Dad's supervision of course).

The term is used by festival crews for an Access All Areas pass but Kaptin also wanted a project that allowed him to explore across his wide ranging musical tastes, so don't expect the same mix twice.
Under many other pseudonyms and projects, Kaptin plays regularly at most major alternative UK festivals such as Glastonbury, Bestival, WOMAD, Secret Garden Party, Green Man, Festival Number 6 and of course BoomTown. He has also recorded mixes for various radio stations including BBC Radio 1 and BBC 1Xtra.

Count Bassy

From Latin to Afro via Reggae, Hip-Hop, Drum’n’Bass and beyond, Count Bassy is never short of beats to make you move your feet! Shaking dancefloors from Glastonbury to Fusion festival and in clubs across London and Europe, his sets are all about good vibes and big tunes, with a healthy dose of bass of course.

Perhaps one of the festival's unsung heroes, Count Bassy is likely better known behind the scenes than in front. He manages around 25 festival stages each summer at some of the UK’s top festivals (Glastonbury, Shambala, Boomtown, Lovebox...), programmes hundreds of live acts and all-round promotes events throughout the year as a key part of top music event production squad Continental Drifts! Unsurprisingly he is also a fantastic DJ and, with his Drifts colleagues, has recently started regular Global Beats Club nights in London. He also runs the national portfolio organisation Global Local supported by Arts Council England, championing culturally diversity with emerging bands from the UK World and Global music scene.

On Thursday 25th October, Mokoomba came all the way from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe to play to a rather diverse crowd at St Mary’s Church, Walthamstow. The night began with myself and my friend exhausted from work, sat slumped on one of the church pews lined with bibles near the…
