YAP aka YUNG AFRIKA PYONEERS

https://soundcloud.com/pastor-aio

Afrobeat & Highlife inspired by Marcus Garvey, Kwame Nkrumah formed the first Young African Pioneer movement in Ghana in the 60s to promote Pan-African ideology amongst the youth. This ideology was adopted by Fela Kuti and he subsequently formed a manifestation of the Young African Pioneers in his sovereign home, Kalakuta Republic, in the 70s. In the 21st century the latest manifestation of young african pioneers takes the spirit of Nkrumah, Garvey, Fela and applies it to a Post-afrobeat, Post-post-Truth world, and attempts, using the popular music forms of africa and beyond, to forge a new ideological direction for a new generation. Come and soak in their delicious Afro grooves.

Album Review: Fela Kuti – Box Set #4 curated by Erykah Badu [Knitting Factory Records; 15th December 2017]

On first impressions, this is just another Fela Kuti compilation, albeit an extensive one. Dig a little deeper, though, and spend a bit more time with the music and, like any good art retrospective, there’s more to it than meets the eye. Badu’s own sensibilities shine through with her penchant…

Review: Natty, Congo Natty, Mad Professor, Subajah & Trojan Soundsystem @ Electric Brixton (London, 4th November 2016)

Tonight begins with a performance from Subajah, who, in and of himself, is an incredibly talented man. He displays his abilities as a rapper, singer and composer with real aplomb. In an age of vapid consumerism, it’s pleasing to find artists willing to stand up and go against the grain, educating the…

Album Review: Fela Ransome Kuti and His Koola Lobitos – Highlife Jazz and Afro-Soul (1963-1969) [Knitting Factory Records, 8th April 2016]

To sum up these three albums in a few words, would be to say that Highlife, Jazz and Afro-Soul is a journey to discover the origins of afrobeat and the Fela Kuti myth. In fact, there was a time when the Black President was ‘simply’ a music student at the Royal Trinity College of…
