Gnawa Night: Maalem Hamid El Kasri & Friends

Copyright Hassan Hajjaj
Maalem Hamid El Kasri is a Gnawa Master from Morocco. He is the champion of Gnawa Culture, praised for rejuvenating the genre while keeping its authenticity alive.

He is to the Guembri what Jimmy Page is to the Guitar.

Born in 1961 in Ksar El Kebir, Hamid El Kasri is not a Son of Maalem (Master) himself but he grew up in the middle of the Gnawa Culture. He was looking up at his grandmother’s husband who was an ancient slave from Soudanese origins, and who taught him a lot about the magical instrument which only Maalems (Masters) are allowed to touch, the Guembri.
He then began learning with great Maalems from the North such as Alouane and Abdelouahed Stitou when he was just 7 years old.

His charisma, powerful voice and mastering of the Guembri instrument make his trademark, recognized and respected by all his fellow contemporary musicians.

He is joined by Soweto Kinch (Sax), Hindi Zahra (Vocals) and Omar El Barkaoui (Drums).
