jazz jamaica
Get ready to rocksteady with Gary Crosby’s 22-piece orchestra, celebrating 50 years of Trojan Records with The Trojan Story. This live musical extravaganza features special guests Brinsley Forde and Noel McKoy and rising stars Dem Three. The choir is joined by the combined Southbank Centre Voicelab and Singology choirs, led by gospel choir leader Mark De-Lisser (BBC’s The Voice), who arranged the gospel choir music for this year’s royal wedding.
Established in 1968, London-based Trojan Records was the first label to distribute the music of Jamaica on a grand scale. It became the first point of contact with Jamaican music and culture for many in the UK, offering a meeting place for young people to celebrate in sound what unites rather than divides us.The orchestra of established and rising stars features award-winning saxophonists Denys Baptiste and Camilla George, trumpeter Mark Kavuma, and Shirley Tetteh on guitar, joined by members of jazz strings quartet Tomorrow’s Warriors String Ting. The distinctive vocals of Forde and McKoy are blended with the lush harmonies of stars-in-the-making Cherise Adams-Burnett, Kianja Harvey-Elliott and Cara Crosby-Irons.The Trojan Story features many of Trojan Records’ best-loved anthems, including Desmond Dekker’s hit ‘Israelites’, Eric Donaldson’s classic ‘Red Red Wine’ and Harry J All Stars’ ‘Liquidator’, specially arranged by Jason Yarde.Presented by Gary Crosby and produced by Tomorrow’s Warriors.
