WORLD MUSIC • WORLD FOOD • WORLD LOVE!

AFRIKAYA SATURDAY - FROM THE RIVERS OF BULAWAYO AND THE STREETS OF SOWETO TO THE SWELTERING AFRO BEAT GROOVES OF LAGOS!

Kaya is perfectly placed within the calendar year to take advantage of the two public holidays of Bank Holiday Monday 5th June and the Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebrations on Tuesday 6th June. Why not extend your stay and enjoy the beauty of Snowdonia and North Wales after the festival finishes? For a family it takes you nicely into your half term holidays, without some of you having to rush back to work!

TONY ALLEN - The Godfather of Afro Beat.

As the drummer and musical director of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s band Africa 70, Tony Oladipo Allen is one of the primary co-founders of Afrobeat music. Fela once stated that “without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat”. Currently working with Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz fame he has been described by Brian Eno as “perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived”.

SONA JOBARTEH

Sona Jobarteh is the first female Kora virtuoso from a prestigious West African Griot family, coming from a long line of hereditary musicians. She is the granddaughter of the master Griot Amadu Bansang Jobarteh and cousin to the celebrated Kora maestro Toumani Diabaté. As a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and producer Sona works with musicians from around the world.

KANDA BONGO MAN

Legendary performer Kanda Bongo Man revolutionized Soukous by encouraging guitar solos after every verse and even at the beginning of the song. His form of Soukous gave birth to the kwassa kwassa dance rhythm where the hips move back and forth while the hands move to follow the hips. Famously championed by the UK’s favourite John Peel.

Set in the heart of the Sussex Downs, Love Supreme Festival returned for its 6th year of spreading the gospel of jazz, blues and soul to some 40,000 music lovers. Unless you were the man who told me, bizarrely, that he “doesn’t like virtuosity in music”, you were going to…

Review: Sona Jobarteh @ Rich Mix (London, 17th November 2016)

Sona Jobarteh is the picture of determination. That’s not just because of her consciousness, musicianship, poignant voice or effect produced by the bright-red dress she wore during her latest London gig at Rich Mix part of EDF London Jazz Festival; it’s something which is intrinsic to her figure. From ‘Jarabi’ to the…
