Event Review: Kanda Bongo Man @ Komedia (Brighton; Saturday 12th October 2019)

Within seconds of entering the room, the sense of anticipation was palpable. One felt sure that some exciting Congolese rhythms were certain to banish any rainy-day blues. The band made their way on to the stage, nonchalantly picked up their instruments and began to play their opening number, sung by…

Preview: Quantic @ Band on the Wall (Manchester; Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th July 2018)

Worcester-born Will Holland aka Quantic returns to Manchester off the back of the recent Quantic y Los Míticos del Ritmo ‘Hotline Bling’ single, an inspired accordion band cover of Drake backed with the more electronic leaning ‘Doombia’. Holland is certainly prolific – a talented bandleader, producer and DJ, the multi-instrumentalist…

Video Premiere: Natty – Things I’ve Done (27th June 2018)

There’s arguably no need for introducing an artist like Natty… The London-based singer/songwriter, with Afro-American and Italian roots and an unconditional love for reggae, has reached the 10th year of his career and will celebrate the anniversary with an upcoming special release. Instead, what we would like to present and…

Album Review: Calexico – The Thread That Keeps Us [City Slang/Anti- Records; January 2018]

Chicano / Mexican rock today is a long list of formidable bands which have produced memorable albums and songs. Calexico, a band from Arizona on LA’s Anti- Records, is such a band – one that has outed itself from the shadow of typical mass-rock to sculpt marvel works. Their new…

The last decade has seen a shift in the role of record labels in the music industry.  More artists are choosing to sign with independent labels to maintain creative collaborative control. Event Review: Love Supreme Festival (Glynde Place, 30th June to 2nd July 2017)

The concept of an outdoor jazz festival hardly conjures images of glitter-filled Glastonbury excitement, a young hip crowd and dance-fuelled elation. However, previously exclusive jazz appears to be undergoing a fashion revolution and the grounds of Glynde Place hinted at this. Love Supreme, the UK’s only three-day greenfield jazz festival…

Curao brings together the mystical music traditions of the Colombian Pacific Coast with captivating modern day production to spectacular effect. Review: Natty, Congo Natty, Mad Professor, Subajah & Trojan Soundsystem @ Electric Brixton (London, 4th November 2016)

Tonight begins with a performance from Subajah, who, in and of himself, is an incredibly talented man. He displays his abilities as a rapper, singer and composer with real aplomb. In an age of vapid consumerism, it’s pleasing to find artists willing to stand up and go against the grain, educating the…

WOMAD 2016 Highlights: Saturday

They invited their fans singing “come see us play”. So we did it and enjoyed every single minute of it. Sidestepper brought their Afro-Colombian groove to WOMAD Festival and it was simply “chevere!”   A few minutes later, we witnessed the brilliant 30-year reunion of Songhai – kora king Toumani Diabate with flamenco guitarists…

Review: The Hot 8 Brass Band @ Electric Brixton (London, 26th May 2016)

Welcomed by a packed and doting Electric Brixton, The Hot 8 Brass Band met expectations: larger than life, feel-good and undoubtedly, infectiously groovy. Before the brassy boy entered, the muso Brixton crowd were well warmed with the reggae delights of the Ragga Twins. From their straight-up Jamaican vibes, to their…

Back in 2009 there was a big music conference like Womex in Bogotà. There I met a guy called Bernard Batzen, who was also Mano Negra and Manu Chao’s manager – an experienced statesman in the world music sphere. He had travelled to Bogotà, participated in the conference, and then…
