2016 was not the year of the Red Fire Monkey. 2017 is not the year of the Red Fire Chicken. This is the time of the Snake.
Mansion of Snakes is a 12-piece behemoth playing bone-shaking afrobeat, devil-funk and cosmic jazz. Fronted by blazing horns and backed by pounding percussion and bass the band fuses the influences of Nigerian afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti with Pharoah Sanders, Funkadelic and a punk energy.
After melting audiences at venues and festivals across the country, the Leeds afrobeat/cosmic jazz warriors have now released their eponymous EP into the wild. Recorded live and hot to tape, this is the one way to feel the power without feeling the sweat.
‘Paper Pictures’ and ‘Forty Miles Per Wolf Hour’ are the singles leading the pack. This deadly pair shows the two Jekyll and Hyde sides to the band. ‘Paper Pictures’ is propelled by the percussion and politically slanted lyrics of Vanessa Rani, following the well-trodden path of afrobeat as protest music.
The velvet tones of ‘Paper Pictures’ conceal a burning anger over social injustice, but ‘Forty Miles Per Wolf Hour’ is a wild beast heading for the jugular. Jagged horns and afro-funk guitars conjure up a police chase from Lagos to Brazil, as saxophones duel with latin percussion and snarling bass.
The earth shall shake and the serpents will dance, for Mansion of Snakes is here.
"A frantic and fantastic devil-funk sermon" - Independent Leeds
"Hard-hitting afrobeat...cosmic jazz, dirty funk and punk energy" - DJ Lubi, Soul Rebels

Here comes the sucker punch! These sweaty brassophiles are taking over London and you better watch out. Expect the naughtiest noughties mashups, spine-tingling hip-hop licks, some tasty latin and tropical flavours, and a generous portion of original bass for your face from BYOB. Inviting a couple of extra-special lip-splitting vocalists on the mic for the next few gigs, be warned - this is not for the faint-hearted.
