Paddy’s Day: Monster Ceilidh Band, Sesh Grenade, Elliot Rush & More!

This Paddy's Day at the Magic Garden, we're having a huge session showcasing some unbelievable UK folk musicians.

Monster Ceilidh Band

Monster Ceilidh Band present their ‘Electrofolk’ spectacular with award winning talents of Accordionist Amy Thatcher and talented young Teeside Violinist Grace Smith. Their powerful and uncompromising approach has brought them to the attention of many of the major UK & European festivals.

“Monster Ceilidh Band have the skills to create that instant party, with an infectious blend that fuses UK folk, with drum & bass.”
- Mike Green; King’s Place, London Folk Guild

The 'Monsters' have been guided by bands like Shooglenifty, Martyn Bennet, and the Peatbog Faeries, continuing in the electronic-fusion genre with their self styled ElectroFolk. D’n’B producer the Touch works together with electronic experimentalist and bassist David de la Haye to augment the compositions of Amy, Grace and Octave Mandolin player, Kieran Szifris. The result is a crucible for smelting riffs, massive chord progressions, intense electronics, folk tunes and a wide variety of styles from simply some of the UK’s finest folk musicians.

This is not a ceilidh, it’s electrofolkmaggeddon! They are
currently the only live Drum ‘n’ Bass, folk act on the festival circuit.

Sesh Grenade

Four words - Bag. Pipe. Session. Explosion. That’s the aim of the Newcastle upon Tyne quartet Sesh Grenade! It’s a warts and all approach to distill the joy of improvised traditional music-making from the North East.

The quartet formed when Queen of Northumbria, HRH Kathryn Tickell, asked Kieran Szifris (octave mandolin) and Sam Partridge (flute and uilleann pipes) to play some tunes after a big show at the Sage Gateshead. They both brought in fellow band members; Joe Truswell from Monster Ceilidh Band, on drums and Jordan Aiken from Pons Aelius, on Border Pipes.

This quartet, enhanced by Szfiris’ electronics, was able to make a great big noise, shaking the glass and steel facia of Sage, prompting Kathryn Tickell to retort “They’re quite good aren’t they”. Holding that in their hearts they hope to bring their brand of “quite good” improvised folk to the world! Take Cover and wait for the Sesh Grenade Disco Party!!

Elliot Rush

Elliot’s family are London Irish and he was brought up on the songs of the Emerald Isle. He is a fantastic pianist and singer and will be joined on stage at The Magic Garden by members of Monster Ceilidh Band on Mandolin, Flute, Drums and Bass.

His repertoire consists of old and new Irish songs. You’ll hear songs from the Cheiftains, Christie Moore, Thin Lizzy, The Saw Doctors and many more. Buy yourself a shot of Irish whiskey with a stout chaser and sing along!

Roddy McDevitt

Roddy is one half of 90's punk-folk duo The Toads, who cut their teeth touring the Irish bars of Europe and settling into residencies in The Toucan Soho & Filthy McNasty's in London before becoming the house band in Ken Campbell's legendary 24 hour play The Warp, and touring Britain and Canada with his Pidgin-English version of Shakespeare's Scottish play Makbed in which Roddy also took the title role.

Roddy's satirical play about boom-time Dublin The Lottery Ticket was nominated for best play in The Dublin Theatre Festival and he starred as Jesus in The Southwark Mysteries by John Constable at Shakespeare's Globe. Roddy has been a member of Stephen Berkov's Theatre Troupe and is also the long-standing MC of The Underground Irish Piano Bar at Glastonbury as well as The Bog Cottage at The Electric Picnic.

He has been writing and performing a series of one man shows about legendary Irish sporting heroes on the festival circuit and has been writing and performing poetry on the Spoken Word circuit but he is never happier than when singing Irish folk ballads and drinking-songs in a good pub with the rare old seshoon atmosphere!

Bazza Ranks

DJ Bazza Ranks runs Irish reggae label Irish Moss Records and is one half of Dublin based production duo the Dirty Dubsters. He plays all manner of party-style dance floor jams!
