Rokia Traoré

Rokia Traoré knew that she wanted to create a new musical style that was 'more modern, but still African, something more blues and rock than my folk guitar.' Then she heard an old Gretsch, the classic electric guitar so beloved by US rockabilly bands of the 50s and 60s, and she found the sound she'd been looking for to help create her last recording Tchamantche. Tonight, she showcases Beautiful Africa, an album of powerful new songs constructed around rock riffs but with a distinctly West African feel produced by P J Harvey and Eels producer John Parish.
