Album Review: Vaudou Game – OTODI [Hot Casa Records: 26th October 2018]

A sentimental fist-bump to Afro-Funk, Vaudou Game’s album OTODI (released by Hot Casa Records) mixes traditional Togolese scales with a James Brown-style rhythm section intended for ritual dance. Lead songwriter Peter Solo attempts to conjure the spirits of voodoo, the very spirits he converses with daily. The third offering from lead…

Review: Womex 2016 (Santiago de Compostela, Spain – 19th to 23rd October 2016)

Womex is something more than an exhibition: it’s more intense and bonding. That’s probably why, for the second time in the last three years, it happened in Santiago de Compostela. More than 2000 “peregrinos de la musica” (music pilgrims), as Paul Bräuer (Piranha’s Director of Communications) aptly defined them, gathered…

Album Review: Vaudou Game – Kidayú [Hot Casa Records, 8th September 2016]

Vaudou Game’s Kidayu is a sophomore album of a second coming of vaudou funk, a genre of orchestral music that was popular in West Africa during the 1960s and 70s. Its ten songs signify proudly and loudly as James Brown meant for funk to, inviting its listeners to feel and…
