Gallery: Ealing Jazz Festival @ Walpole Park (London; Saturday 28th July 2018)

zara-mcfarlane-16

We’re guilty of rarely venturing too far west in London, but when we do we always live our days up, attending outstanding events and enjoying every minute of it.

The 2018 edition of Ealing Jazz Festival was no exception. Despite the blustery weather blowing sand all over Walpole Park and forcing the audience to squeeze their eyes shut, under the two tents set up as stages it was an oasis of quality music and smooth vibes.

Some far-reaching sounds from the likes of Afro-Brazilian Londoners Let Drum Beat, plenty of urban jazz thanks to Zara McFarlane and Vels Trio, and a flood of musicianship from those such as drum master Tony Allen kept us company throughout our Ealing visit on the last Saturday of July.

Take a gander at it in our gallery!

Review: Love Supreme Festival @ Glynde Place (Glynde, East Sussex; Friday 29th June to Sunday 1st July 2018)

Set in the heart of the Sussex Downs, Love Supreme Festival returned for its 6th year of spreading the gospel of jazz, blues and soul to some 40,000 music lovers. Unless you were the man who told me, bizarrely, that he “doesn’t like virtuosity in music”, you were going to…

Review: Tony Allen & Amp Fiddler @ Ghost Notes (London; Thursday 10th May 2018)

Opening the evening was Mogadisco’s finest selection of African beats, thus setting the scene for the proceeding collusion of cross-border musicians. The left of the stage was set for a legendary Nigerian afro-beat drummer operating with Tony Allen’s full drum kit, whilst the symmetrical spotlight to the right shone upon…

Review: Carleen Anderson: Cage Street Memorial + Zara McFarlane @ Barbican Centre (London; 20th January 2018)

It doesn’t happen every day that we get to enjoy a double-bill show celebrating the artistry of two remarkable female musicians. Luckily, we didn’t miss the unique opportunity which happened on stage at the Barbican where we saw two such protagonists in Carleen Anderson and Zara McFarlane. Despite the two…

Hot on the heels of his highly acclaimed EP, A Tribute To Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers, drumming legend Tony Allen returns with his wonderfully crafted jazz LP, The Source. Having never truly explored the genre before, Allen has married jazz with his first love, afrobeat, the results of…

Review: Jazz Re:Found (Turin, Italy – 7th to 11h December 2016)

Today, black music is warmth, experimentation, crossbreeding, avant-garde, tradition, and rhythm. Turin’s Jazz Re:Found festival explores these definitions, with a curious and forward thinking vision on music, honouring great names of the past while looking at the most current scenes with a sharp eye and sensitive ear. Spread across seven…

Review: Metá Metá + Let Drum Beat @ Battersea Arts Centre (London, 13th September 2016)

They catch your attention and ears and won’t release them until they have played the last note of their set. That’s how Metá Metá has become one of the most intriguing projects coming from Brazil. They did the same last week, when they exposed their creativity and originality on the…
