This Radio Show was particularly special and poignant for me as I did it in my room not in a radio studio. That personal bedroom digging mission took me on a journey through music I felt might represent the things I perceive as my identity. I am half Irish & half Ashkenazi Jewish. The similarities in Celtic, and English folk music and Eastern European music struck me. Minimalism, Mournfulness and Emotion. These properties are prevalent in all folk music of course and that became clearer the further I dug. Georgian folk music seemed to unify many aspects of musical interest and heritage.Sitting between the Middle East and Eastern Europe, the concept of being an Eastern European Jew suddenly made more sense. The cultural and musical similarities that I’m sure are self evident for many suddenly rear their head. This radio show is very melancholy and not necessarily for someone who needs cheering. However, I think for anyone seeking some gentle introspection, drones and beautiful melodies its a good one. I am no Ethnomusicologist. These selections are scattered from all over the world and throughout time. For me there is a unifying mood that I somehow identify with. But what the fuck do I know, I normally play reggae…
Breadminster-based DJ/Producer Elijah Minnelli has been making a splash in the world of broadcasting thanks to his monthly show on Soho Radio. Elijah’s unique angle, which champions vintage calypso/mento/cumbia/beguine alongside left-field dub & reggae cuts, has cemented him a cult fanbase consistently placing him in the top 10 of Mixcloud’s Global ska chart.
Elijah has DJ’d internationally and at home. His eclectic feel-good calypso to dub selections have proved a hit with a diverse range of audiences, and seen him perform with Sunday Best at SXSW in Austin, Texas, at the GREAT Festival of Innovation in Hong Kong, and in support of Specials co-founder Jerry Dammers.
