Preview: Hi-Life Conversations (Facebook: Saturday 27th June 2020)
Today, from 5PM, join us on Facebook for an afternoon and evening of Hi-Life sounds and words!
Hi-life music originated in present-day Ghana early in the 20th century. It harnesses the melodic and rhythmic structures of traditional Akan music, but is played mainly with Western instruments.
Hi-life is distinguished by jazzy horns and multiple guitars which lead the band. Contemporary highlife has evolved with the trends and technology of today’s Ghanaian pop culture, it still retains the melodies and rhythmic structures of traditional Akan music, cementing its importance within the history and indigenous culture of the country.
We bring together a group of seasoned hi-life musicians from across the generations to have a conversation about Hi-Life which is an essential part of the Ghanaian cultural fabric. Conversation will be interspersed with Hi-Life DJ sets from VoltaFortyfive and Richmond Kessie (Chief Commander Yaaba, Yaaba Funk)
