Preview: Batov Records Takeover at Hootananny Brixton – “Big Balkan Bash” @ Hootananny (London; Saturday 10th May 2019)
We grew fonder and fonder of Batov Records and its mission. In the last six years (it was founded in the “heady summer days of 2013”), the London label, captained by DJ Kobayashi, has constantly thrown a vivid light on the new sounds coming from the Middle East, East Mediterranean and Balkan regions, not forgetting about the local musicians, and launching many fresh and captivating bands into the UK scene.
On Saturday 10th May, join them at the Hootananny in Brixton, when they will be accompanied by some of the ‘gypsyest’ bands in the label’s roster. The Big Balkan Bash will indeed be a Gypsy, Balkan, Balkanbeats, punk and folk bonanza, that will have you dancing for six hours to the tunes of The Great Malarkey, Tantz, DIN /drowned.in.noise and Batov’s honcho DJ Kobayashi.

We also listen to a new single by Abelardo Carbono x Meridian Brothers and a…

Boomtown Fair is a lot of fun. It is an immersive and well-detailed festival that puts a great deal of effort into making Boomtown feel like a real town. This year, Boomtown placed participants at the final chapter of a political framework, questioning where the wealth and power between Boomtown…

We dedicated the first cover of our magazine to the fathers of Gypsy punk and one of the most influential bands of the Gypsy music scene. If you recently danced to some Gypsy sounds, Balkan Beats or Eastern European music, it is likely that behind the decks there was one…
What happens when gypsy, folk, punk and blues influences converge into the spirit of an eight-person band, after a five-year break from intense writing, listening and performing on tour? The answer might be something like a ticking bomb ready to explode and well… That is the case for The Great…
