If you think that the title of this event has a political ring to it, you’re absolutely right. But, as hackneyed as it sounds, music has always been the “universal language”, so why not head down to Rich Mix in Shoreditch this Saturday to hear spoken word and music artists flex their creative muscles and engage with some of the most controversial issues facing our time?
Part of English PEN and Rich Mix’s Crossing Borders event, and proceeded by an afternoon of discussion and debate, curators Arts Canteen will help to host an evening showcasing seven female artists from the Arab World and their diasporas. Join Syrian kanun player Maya Youssef, ‘Sudani-Jazz’ singer Amira Kheir, tombak player and singer Somaye, YouTube star Elaha Soroor, singer/songwriter Nadya Shanab, musician and poet Juliana Yazbeck, and spoken word artist Fajr Tamimi MC for what looks likely to be a bold, eclectic, and immersive evening.
Every month, we bring you a collection of the best world music-related videos. That’s our way to give value to too often overlooked, rich and diverse artistic expressions. Listen with your eyes! Watch the full playlist:
