Preview: Cubafrobeat – Lokkhi Terra meets Dele Sosimi + Kadialy Kouyate @ Woolwich Works (London; Friday 1st October 2021)
Launching an exciting and thought-provoking calendar of events like the Black History Month’s one is a responsibility not easy to face. So, to inaugurate the Woolwich Works series showcasing and celebrating African and Afro-diasporic cultural expressions, there are going to be some of the finest and representative interpreters of those traditions, to give life to a good-and-proper cultural bash bringing together musical influences from Western Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean enriched by the forward-looking London jazzy character.
On the 1st of October, we will pay a visit to the coolest new venue in London town, Woolwich Works, to welcome two outstanding acts, Cubafrobeatand Kadialy Kouyate.
Connecting the musical dots between Lagos in Nigeria and the Cuban capital, La Havana and featuring no less than afrobeat Ambassador Dele Sosimi and London “fusionistas-par-excellence” Lokkhi Terra band members, Cubafrobeat‘s enrapturing groove is made for dancing and feeling it on your skin.
Their rhythms are exhilarating, attitude inclusive and heart-warming. Their debut album, released by Funkiwala Records three years ago, is a genuine and precious example of multicultural teamwork. But it’s the live dimension that fully reveals the overwhelming energetic drive of the project. On stage, the 11 musicians form a closely knitted ensemble sound reflecting their cross-Atlantic influences, top-notch musicianship and vivid flair. Cubafrobeat’s shows are one-off events offering new meanings and perspectives of Afro-diasporic music.
While, to raise the curtain on the evening and celebrate the launch of his brand new album Aado, we present the fascinating songwriting of Kadialy Kouyate. Kadialy, who was born in the prominent Kouyate griot family in Southern Senegal, is a talented singer/songwriter inspired by his West African Mandinka roots. As well as his virtuosity, Kadialy’s music is characterised by his mesmerising voice, which harmoniously blends with the dream-like sound of the kora giving life to charming musical sketches of Mandinka traditions.
Then join us at Woolwich Works on Friday, when we will set in motion our Black History Month event calendar showcasing the all-encompassing sound of Cubafrobeat and Kadialy Kouyate and their insight, experience and viewpoint on African music.
