Preview: Diabel Cissokho – Tambacunda Express Album Launch @ Rich Mix (London, 29th June 2016)
Tambacounda is one of the richest and liveliest cultural cities of Senegal. Musically, it can be considered as one of the hubs of the country, harbouring a centuries-old tradition and having given birth to some remarkable djembe players. The city is also the place where Diabel Chissoko grew up and his primary source of inspiration. That’s why the multi-instrumentalist decided to dedicate his upcoming release to his hometown.
On the 29th of June, he will introduce the Rich Mix audience to Tambacounda Express, his fourth album and (as its name easily suggests) a musical journey on the Dakar-Niger railway. The work, like Diabel’s sound, embraces influences from all over West Africa: alongside the Senegalese Mandinka tradition, it is possible to sense Malian, Guinean, Nigerian and even Moroccan references. There won’t be a better way to hop on the Tambacounda Express than boarding at its station of departure in East London.
You will also be accompanied by gifted fellow passengers like the exquisite Italian-Sudanese talent Amira Kheir and Mohamed Gueye & The Djembe African Dance Group with their Senegalese exuberant sabar and djembe rhythms and dance moves.
CALLING ALL FIERCE WOMXN and lovers of! Led and curated by one of our own DJ Sophie Darling, Rhythm Passport will be hosting a full day streaming festival on Saturday 13th June inspired by Sophie’s podcast series: Femina Del Fuego – Fundraiser Festival. Femina is Latin for Feminine and we’ve…

When Amira Kheir’s very first song at The Junction on Saturday night was greeted with joyous ululating from a refreshingly diverse crowd, the tone was set for a special gig. `Save those for later’ she promised, leading her band into the shimmering ‘Amwaj’ (Waves) from her latest album Mystic Dance….
Amira Kheir is no stranger to making critically acclaimed albums, this latest instalment being her third full-length release for Sterns Music after View From Somewhere (2011), and Alsahraa (2014). Amira Kheir has a beautiful sound that smoothly blends the nostalgic tones of East Africa: North Sudan/Southern Egypt Nubian musical traditions,…
It’s not often I can say that reviewing an album made my day, but in the case of Senégalese multi-instrumentalist Diabel Cissokho’s latest release, Tambacounda Express, it certainly did! The album, which, as Diabel affirmed during a chat we had at Womad UK this Summer, takes its name from the…
