Preview: Emma-Jean Thackray @ Church of Sound (London, 13th October 2017)
Emma-Jean Thackray is off the wall and liberating. A jazz trumpeter, flugel player and composer, she concocts blends of deep horn, with electronic rhythms and world jazz in its most free abstraction.
She will be playing at the Church of Sound, a heavenly hall perfect for finding spirituality in the heights of the music.
Her first set will include a number of songs from the Ethio-jazz songbook whose origins are not fully understood. It is believed to represent the musical exchanges between East Africa and other world influences from the 1950s and ’60s. The second set will be based on her own compositions.
Thackray is an artist who follows her heart unwaveringly. Expect expressive improvisation and simply expect the unexpected.
