Preview: Gaye Su Akyol @ The Jazz Cafe (London; Friday 29th November 2019)
To end November, the trusty Jazz Cafe have booked an evening with Turkey’s female offering of psychedelia and funky-folky rock.
Gaye Su Akyol has been unstoppable in the last couple of years; perhaps a peak would be playing 2018’s WOMAD. Her blend of Turkish tonality, funk, political and social sentiment in lyrics, and traditional instrumentation has helped her to become a face of contemporary Turkish music.
The surfer-esque guitar riffs, heavy bass, and driving drum beats are paired with her live charisma; varying from slower, darker, deeper songs to those more suited to accompanying a dance party, the overall atmosphere and pumping experience.

With so much good music being published and uploaded every month, we constantly find hard to keep up with all the releases. Luckily, “we get by with a little help from our friends”… We are more than thrilled to welcome and introduce you to Chamonix-based online radio, record label, DJs…
Making her UK performance debut earlier this year at WOMAD UK, Turkish singer-songwriter and producer Gaye Su Akyol is definitely one to watch (if you haven’t already). Growing up on Anatolian pop and rock, she takes these genres along with her interest in psychedelic, surf, post-punk and electronic sounds to…
In a year where world politics has seen neighbouring countries close their curtains and shut their doors, music is an increasingly important platform for cross-cultural celebration. Gaye Su Akyol is an artist originating from the Black Sea Coast, who unwittingly seems to be achieving just that. Through fusing her own…
Gaye Su Akyol blends Western rock and the sounds of psychedelia with traditional Turkish-influenced melodies. A dizzying and yet strangely addictive combination, imagine finding yourself on a hallucinatory high with a herd of dancing camels in a middle-eastern desert, and this would be the perfect soundtrack. Gaye is a fresh…
