Preview: Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards @ KOKO (London; Saturday 19th January 2019)
Broken beats and brass accents start playing in anticipation of the return of Gilles Peterson’s annual Worldwide Awards. A venerable scout for the tastiest emerging global music, label and radio owner Peterson never fails to satisfy the palettes of the ticketed audience with a mix of his best picks of new world jazz, soul and dance music.
Dur Dur Band International are a London-based Somalian band led by bass player Abdillahi Ujeery playing both original and new Muqadishu-funk and disco. They will have you gravitating to the dance floor with their mouth-wateringly good 80s grooves. The battle of the funkiest tunes may be stolen, however, by Atmosfear, as they will have you discovering your inner disco dance champion, celebrating Mr Bongo label’s re-release of their 80s Brit-funk record En Trance. This was an album that graced London’s club scene in a time where hustling and crate-digging where simply a part of education.
HAAi is an interesting newcomer to the electronic world music scene. Having cut her teeth spinning vinyl on the side of Ridley Road Market, injecting Turkish and South Indian beats into the mix, the Australian DJ quickly ascended to playing large techno clubs.
One of the most diverse events of the year, watch Peterson enrich our club consciousness yet again, and allow yourself to step away from the status quo into the rhythm of progression.
