Preview: Jazz Cubano: Jazz Cubano with Omar Sosa & Yilian Cañizares + Arturo O’Farrill Sextet + Alfredo Rodriguez @ Barbican Centre (London; Friday 23rd November 2018)
The EFG London Jazz Festival has seen some of the biggest names in Latin jazz, but the current genre front runners will be taking to the Barbican stage on 23rd November. Perhaps none are better known for their versatile style and inherent knowledge of the Latin jazz language than Arturo O’Farrill. What makes the performance with his sextet even more heartfelt is the visible musical connection with his sons, who are trumpeter Adam O’Farrill and drummer Zack O’Farrill.
The night will be continued by the talented piano virtuoso, Alfredo Rodriguez – a performer in a calibre of his own, who will return to a UK stage after his appearance in the BBC Proms last year. To top it off, Omar Sosa and violin player Yilian Cañizares are showcasing their spectacular new project. A work of art that has Sosa’s firmly-rooted Cuban style ornamented beautifully by the tender timbre of Canizares’s vocals and violin. Jazz Cubano is a night you will not want to miss.

Despite jazz’s being born to warm weather New Orleans, a city full of “elaborate wedding-cake ceilings, wide sliding doors, tall French windows” to quote New Orleans native Truman Capote, the music has always adapted itself to cold weather living pretty well. If a life of surrounding swamps, deltas, briar patches,…
