Preview: La Linea Festival 2017 (London, 18th to 29th April 2017)
It’s Springtime, and there’s no Springtime without the Latin vibes brought to London by La Linea.
Since 2001, the celebrated festival, organised by ¡Como no! has enhanced the London musical calendar for more than a week, updating British audiences on what is happening in the Spanish, South and Latin American music scenes. La Linea also gives music enthusiasts the chance to celebrate the legendary names pioneering their traditions.
It will be all set in motion on the 18th of April, at The Barbican Centre. There, Mexican singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Julieta Venegas (supported by Gizmo Varillas) will show how to conciliate an independent soul with popular appeal, challenging gender and cultural stereotypes.
The festival will then roll on, up until the 29th of April, when another talented artist, the up-and-coming Eliane Correa with her En El Aire Project and The London Lucumi Choir will close the 2017 edition of La Linea, bringing some Cuban scents to London’s East End. Everything in between will be a sequence of unique musical highlights.
Amongst them, the energetic norteño sound of Orkesta Mendoza with their Tex-Mex wall-defying identity, cumbia vitality and mambo smoothness (on the 21st at Rich Mix). On the same evening, you can also choose to be lulled by the Portuguese persuasive musical poetry of António Zambujo. The artist from Beja will give life, at Cadogan Hall, to a tribute aimed at one of his inspirations: Chico Buarque.
While, on the 20th at the Concrete, you will have the opportunity to explore the new wave of Latin underground and electronic sounds, thanks to two London-based collectives called La Kasha and Telajeta.
Finally, the voice, charisma and enticing rhythms of Colombian music legend Toto La Momposina will win everyone at Cadogan Hall on the 28th.
It goes without saying that it’ll be another Latin Spring in London.
