openthegateartworkland

It’s almost that time of the year again, when you can spend an entire day at Rich Mix enjoying dozens of exciting acts, from West-East-North-Southern Africa, Latin and South America, and well, the UK entirely for free. That’s because Open the Gate Festival is approaching, and on Saturday 8th June it will monopolise the cultural centre in Shoreditch for the tenth time.

Thirteen hours of good music, from the Afro-Brazilian carnival rhythms performed by Pumpkin Jigsaw (including our very own Xi-mali Kadeena Guscotch) to Kodjovi Kush & Afrospot All-Stars and their funky Afro-fusion. In between, anything and everything. Somali hip-hop by Aar Maanta, Luzmira Zerpa (frontwoman of Family Atlantica) presenting her new Afro-Venezuelan project, Algerian oud master and Hackney musical institution Seddik Zebiri, gnawa authority Simo Lagnawi with his Gnawa London, Open the Gate Soundsystem and much, much more, including the African market, food stalls, workshops…

From noon to 1am on 8th June, it’s all about Open the Gate!

Album Review: Simo Lagnawi & Gnawa London – Africa Soyo [February 2020]

In recent decades, the music of the Gnawa has transitioned from a repertoire of ritualistic trance-inducing songs – performed exclusively for the adherents of its night-long healing ceremonies – to a more profane yet equally transfixing professional type of music, played on festival stages and in venues the world over. Due not…
