Preview: Orchestre Les Mangelepa @ Rich Mix (London; Tuesday 24th July 2018)
Eastern African music wouldn’t be the same without Les Mangelepa. The ‘Orchestre’, which originated in East-Congo in the mid-1970s and moved to Nairobi afterwards, helped to shape and give a decisive boost to the Golden Age of Kenyan music, becoming a protagonist of the lingala scene.
Their captivating and easily danceable sound, drawing plenty from the musicians’ native Congolese rumba and son, but also going beyond them, welcoming more Kenyan traditional influences made adept all over the African Continent, has finally been brought to Europe by No Nation, Katebul Music and Strut Records through their latest album Last Band Standing.
After 40 years of making people dance in Eastern Africa, Orchestre Les Mangelepa are finally receiving some well-deserved recognition outside their continent too. So, don’t miss the opportunity to pay tribute to an African music legend and head for Rich Mix on the 24th July for the first London show of Les Mangelepa!
