Undoubtedly, percussionist, composer, and London resident since the 1980s Roberto Pla has made an important contribution to musical and cultural life across the UK and Europe. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, Pla had the opportunity to be surround himself with gorgeous music and folklore whose legacy extends to the present day.
Two decades ago, it was taken for granted that to play Latin music it was a requisite to be born in Latin America. Nowadays, Pla himself recognises that anyone can play Latin music, be they English, European, Asian, or North American. In this sense, his concert ‘Our Latin Thing’ refers to the Latin soul or the part of it that everyone carries inside him/herself.
This year 2016 the ‘Godfather of Latin Music in UK,’ celebrates his 30th anniversary featuring music by Fania All-Stars, such as Willie Colón, Rubén Blades, Johnny Pacheco, Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, Ismael Miranda, among others. The Barbican Centre welcomes the sensuality and eroticism of a contagious Latin style composing salsa, cumbia and Afro Caribbean rhythms.
This is a ‘must-go’ gig for every Londoner, an opportunity to share ‘Our Latin Thing,’ dance, sing, and listen along to Pla, his Latin Orchestra and a broad range of special guests like Omar Puente, Snowboy, Rey Crespo, Dorance Lorza, Satin Singh, Eliane Correa, London Lucumi Choir and Juanita Euka
