On the evening of Friday the 9th of March, one of London’s most iconic venues, The Jazz Café, will host a night of Indo-jazz music with UPAJ Collective, led by composer, producer and percussionist Sarathy Korwar.
Born in the US but raised in India and now based in London, Sarathy’s sounds are largely inspired by the music and performing style of the Siddi community of southern India. He impressively combines traditional hypnotic devotional chants with jazz grooves and melodic improvisations. For this event, he will present a group of remarkable musicians: Arun Ghosh Sextet and Soumik Datta.
Arun Ghosh is a leading figure in the international indo-jazz scene and a true pleasure for lovers of clarinet improvisation. Together with his sextet, Ghosh will perform music from his fourth and freshly released album But Where Are You Really From? This question finds an answer in each of the album’s 14 tracks, with tabla, drums, electric bass and other instruments all featured, and textures ranging from South Asian to rock, but never moving away from jazz.
Soumik Datta is undoubtedly one of the masters of the sarod, an ancient fretless stringed instrument used mainly in Hindustani music. Having collaborated with global stars including Anoushka Shankar, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Akram Khan and Manu Delago, to name a few, he presents and represents a new blend of contemporary western and Indian raga music.
Today, London-based Bengali composer, producer and sarod player Soumik Datta launches Silent Spaces, a brand-new multimedia project shaped in collaboration with his brother, the Award-winning filmmaker Souvid Datta. Silent Spaces is a 6-part series of videos that “sees the brothers join a diverse team of British Asian, black and ethnic…
