Preview: Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 @ Stanley Halls (London, Friday 4th May 2018)
Sean Kutiandthe Egypt 80 continue the vivacious afrobeat legacy of Nigeria whilst performing tracks with social commentary in high-energy Afro-jazz-funk performances, live in London at Stanley Halls on Friday 4th May.
At the age of 14 years old, Sean Kuti stepped into the tremendous shoes of his father – the pioneer of afrobeat, Fela Kuti. He took over as the bandleader to the illustrious Egypt 80, who performed their new eclectic genre with Fela Kuti in the ‘70s: African rhythms and musicality with Afro-jazz, upbeat, fun, and a social commentary. Afrobeat… a staple sound for Nigeria.
Since Sean Kuti became band leader of Egypt 80, with over three-quarters of the original line-up, we can expect Sean Kuti to perform tracks from his latest album, Black Times. He is a further combatant against inequality in Africa, corrupt governments, and the struggle and experiences of Black people.
Stanley Halls will be a reasonably intimate venue to see the high-energy experience that is Sean Kuti, who performs with all the vivacity and vigour of the Afrobeat legacy he bears.

Walking into the small, church-like Stanley Halls, one could hear the familiar stabbing-horn sounds of afrobeat emanating from the hall. The venue almost juxtaposed the performance on stage; as one entered, a musical, colourful spectacle erupted from the stage, held together with aged wooden beams and high ceilings. The sound…
