Preview: Sona Jobarteh @ Rich Mix (London, 16th November 2016)
Sona Jobarteh hails from one of the most renowned Griot families in Western Africa. A family with a long tradition of producing remarkable artists, minstrels and storytellers, little more than 30 years ago, the Jobarteh family gave life to Sona: the first “female Kora virtuoso to come from a prestigious West African Griot family”.
Sona is much more than her family name however. She’s also a singer, a multi-instrumentalist (playing guitar and cello), a composer, producer, music teacher and a modern day voice for West African people and culture.
Her presence, determination and musical talents will honour this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival. She will bring her unique troubadour, storytelling skills and style, along with her band to Rich Mix on the 16th of November, where you will be fully immersed in the Gambian tradition of unique sounds coupled with Sona’s spellbinding stage presence.
The ‘First Lady’ of Griot and her band are renowned for delivering unique and extraordinary performances, audiences at Rich Mix are in for a memorable, midweek experience.
