Preview: Steam Down @ Village Underground (London; Wednesday 24th April 2019)
Steam Down are the arts collective that is putting Deptford on the world map. This is a group of London-based artists that come together at their weekly jam to play improvised music based on jazz, Afrobeat, grime and hip hop. Their philosophy, that the audience is an equal part of the performance, means there is no room for passivity and could be described as a jazz rave.
Steam Down family are led by saxophonist and composer Ahnanse, and members include Alex Rita, BrotherPortrait, SawaManga, TheonCross, Nadeem, BenjaminAppiah, DominicCanning and Nache. Their mid-week night started as a low-key weekly jam. As well-known names started to pass through, such as NubyaGarcia and KamasiWashington, the event started to gain traction, and Steam Down are now one of the main groups pioneering the UK jazz movement. This gig will come on the back of the collective finishing their first European tour.
The family aim to create a community that is much bigger than just the music. So, as they allow themselves to be the vessel for a higher expression of creativity, come at Village Underground on the 24th of April and show your appreciation and channel your energy in any way you know how.
